Governor Sanford Reappoints Schweitzer to Lead Public Safety
SCHWEITZER APPOINTED TO ANOTHER 4-YEAR TERM, PENDING SENATE CONFIRMATION
December 3, 2007
Columbia, S.C. -Governor Mark Sanford today announced that he has reappointed Jim Schweitzer to lead the South Carolina Department of Public Safety for another four-year term.
Schweitzer, 55, was first appointed in 2004 to lead the Department of Public Safety, the state agency that oversees the state Highway Patrol, Bureau of Protective Services and state Transportation Police. Prior to coming to DPS, Schweitzer served in numerous leadership roles with the FBI, including Chief of Instruction at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau’s headquarters here in Columbia, S.C.
“First off, I want to thank Jim for the job he’s done over the past four years at DPS,” Gov. Sanford said. “Jim has worked hard to put more Troopers back on our roads, has led the Department back from some lean budget years, and has been a real advocate in our push for stronger DUI laws. How safe we are on our roads and highways is a big part of our quality of life here in South Carolina, and I look forward to continuing to work with Jim and the rest the Department of Public Safety as they work toward fulfilling that mission.”
“I am extremely pleased that through this reappointment, Gov. Sanford has expressed his confidence in the direction our agency is moving,” Schweitzer said.
