Governor Sanford Requests FEMA Assessment, Aid

Columbia, S.C. - March 19, 2008 - Governor Mark Sanford today made a request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assess damage caused by this weekend’s tornados. The governor is asking for the damage assessment as a step toward getting a presidential disaster declaration and federal aid for those affected by the storms. The National Weather Service confirmed 17 tornados in South Carolina this weekend, with touchdowns all over the state causing damage to hundreds of homes and millions of dollars in property damage. Governor Sanford visited affected sites in Kershaw, Orangeburg, and Berkeley counties on Monday, and will follow that up with visits to Newberry and Allendale counties today.

Columbia, S.C. - March 18, 2008 - Governor Mark Sanford today joined with Spartanburg Solicitor Trey Gowdy and Beaufort Sheriff P.J. Tanner to call for the passage of both DUI Reform and Immigration Reform - two parts of Governor Sanford’s “First 30 Days” agenda he called for in this year’s State of the State address. Both DUI Reform and Immigration Reform have passed the Senate and House and are awaiting action in conference committees, where the two chambers will work out their differences on the bills.

Mark Sanford today announced the findings of his Children in Foster Care and Adoption Services Task Force - a group he formed last year and tasked with identifying ways to improve the efficiency and quality of the state's foster care and adoption processes, and in particular reducing the time it takes to find permanent adoptive homes for the most vulnerable children across South Carolina.
